Dominica – Indian River

Our tour up the Indian River shows us how resilient nature can be.

As you can see, many of the trees that created the full canopy are gone but the new growth is filling in.

The Blood Wood trees (named for their red sap) are turning green again. Many of these trees have been growing on the river bank for a hundred years.

The coconuts are well on their way to making new coconut palms! The small coconut trees are everywhere! It may take them a year or two to mature but they will get there.

The trails don’t have the forest canopy shading them which has caused the flowers to come out in full force. Everywhere you look there are brightly coloured flowers.

Chris found himself in a very lively patch of colourful wild ginger. Hmmm….. wonder if you can make ginger beer out of this stuff….. Ginger Beer is a very popular local drink and when you mix it with rum it is called a Dark and Stormy and is quite easy to drink.

The flowers mean many kinds of butterflies and birds are also able to flourish.

This part of the Indian River was part of the 2nd Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The dock to the left lead to a small house that was part of the scene but the house is now destroyed by Maria.
